At stake was the season ending No1 position. At stake was the prize purse for season ending No1 team. At stake was the reputation of Dhoni's team that has not lost a test match before Nagpur. The safas had their tails up with Nagpur win. Steyn had the Indians scurrying for cover in the series so far. The mission to win at kolkotta was, then, going to be a handful task.
Though the safas were shot out for less than par score of 296, the test was not out of their hands specially when draw could hand them the year end No1 position.
This man, shewag, came with all guns blazing. The spectators and safas were treated with unending and ruthless attacking batsmanship. The safas had two sweepers on off side and two on on sie, but the boundries weren't stopping from this man's bat. The deficit was wiped out in no time and safas could then feel the heat of Indians piling on lead, importantly,in quick time.
We are talking pressure and heat on safas. But, the shewag's innings had another effect too. That's: taking team ahead quickly, providing momentum & direction to fellow batsmen and taking off all pressure from his fellow batsmen. His innings, thus, also provided path for tendulkar's, laxman's and dhoni's centuries.
There was one more effect like the icing on the cake:- India have never before won a test match when four players scored century in that match. The shewag's innings not only could let the team accommodate three more centuries but also a rain day too. THE MAN IS SHEWAG!
